The battles for Chattanooga in the fall of 1863 determined the course of the war in the western theater. By breaking the Confederate siege of Chattanooga, Federal armies under the command of Gen. U. S. Grant opened the path to Atlanta. The visitor center at Lookout Mountain’s Point Park is the best way to begin a visit to the Tennessee side of these momentous events.  The park’s major visitor center at Chickamauga, Georgia, puts the entire campaign in perspective.
