Point Park, established 1905, is the location of the headquarters of the 3,000-acre Lookout Mountain Battlefield. After he Confederate victory at Chickamauga, the U.S. army retreated to Chattanooga and Confederate troops occupied Lookout Mountain, where they could watch almost all Federal activities. Once Gen. U.S. Grant took command of all of the Federal armies at Chattanooga, he was determined to break the Confederate siege. The “Battle Above the Clouds” took place on November 24, 1863, when the Federal troops of Gen. Joseph Hooker drove the Southerners from the mountain. The following morning, the American flag flew from the mountainís pinnacle. After the war, the memorial Point Park commemorated that pivotal event in the battles for Chattanooga.
