Lookout Mountain
New York Monument
located at Cravens House
This monument commemorates the charge of the 60th, 78th, 102nd, 137th, and 149th New York Infantry, part of the Federal command of Gen. Joseph Hooker, during the Battle of Wauhatchie on Oct. 28-29, 1863. This significant battle determined control of a key railroad junction, ending the Confederate siege of Chattanooga and marking the beginning of a major Federal offensive. Union troops now controlled the roads through Lookout Valley, allowing for easier communication and reinforcement. The railroad tracks lie directly south of the monument
