Orchard Knob Reservation
500 North Highland Park Ave.

Directions from Chattanooga National Cemetery: Turn left back onto Holtzclaw Avenue and drive 0.8 miles to the intersection with East 3rd Street. Turn right. Proceed 0.5 miles to Orchard Knob Avenue and turn right. Just beyond the gate, turn right and park on Ivy Street. Enter through the gate and walk up the drive to top of hill.

In November 1863, troops from the U.S. Army of the Cumberland successfully took control of Orchard Knob, a high point between downtown Chattanooga and Missionary Ridge where the Confederate army was massed. Gen. U.S. Grant established his headquarters at the Knob, where he ordered the following day’s successful federal charge against Missionary Ridge. The park has several interesting Civil War monuments commemorating the federal troops who fought there.
