Directions: I-75 Exit 33. Proceed on TN 308/Lauderdale Memorial Hwy toward Charleston. Go 3 miles and turn left on Hwy 11. Go 0.7 miles and turn right on Market St. Turn left onto Railroad St. Church is on the right.

Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, this Greek Revival-style building served as a Confederate hospital. In November 1863, troopers of Company C of the 1st Tennessee Cavalry, C.S.A., led by Capt. Richard Van Dyke of Athens, helped to evacuate the town. Van Dyke’s cavalry then joined the 38th Tennessee Infantry, led by Col. John C. Carter, in occupying this river town for a few weeks. Throughout 1864 to the war’s end, however, Federal troops controlled the town.
