Buttram Cemetery
U.S. Highway 27 at Walnut Grove Road, Dayton
Directions: From downtown Dayton, travel 27-N. Cemetery is beside the old hospital on the right.
Dayton, the present seat of Rhea County, was once a tiny village known as Smith’s Crossroads located just south of the historic Buttram Cemetery on U.S. Highway 27. The county’s best known Civil War story took place at the crossroads near here in 1865 during the last weeks of the fighting.
