Beth Salem Presbyterian Church

Directions: I-75 Exit 49. Follow TN 30-E through Athens. Turn Right on County Road 602. Church is 2 miles ahead.

This rural African American church, which was built c. 1920, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It marks the location of one of the county’s earliest black churches, dating to August 1866. The first church was a log building, used as a Freedmen’s Bureau school during the week and as a community church on Sundays.
