This 1862 federal fort on the Tennessee River is located at the mouth of Battle Creek and the Tennessee River, northeast of downtown South Pittsburg. It was named for Gen. Alexander McCook and served as a key post in the federal occupation of the Sequatchie Valley. On Aug. 27, 1862, soldiers at the fort faced a 12-hour Confederate bombardment from positions across the river before abandoning South Pittsburg and allowing the Confederates to control Marion County for the next year.
