Nickajack Cave
New Hope

Nickajack Cave
Shellmound Road (View from road only. Property is maintained by Tennessee Valley Authority)

Directions: I-24 Exit 161. Follow TN 156-W toward New Hope, approximately 5 miles to view cave across the water on the left.

Used by Native Americans for hundreds of years, this historic cave became a major saltpeter mine for the Confederacy during the Civil War. In the mid-20th century, the Tennessee Valley Authority constructed Nickajack Dam, which raised the river to such a level that it submerged many rooms in the cave. The agency closed the cave to public access.
