Native American Trail

This guide highlights sites and stories relating to Native American history of this region. The brochure includes Cherokee history up through the removal and also includes sites in the 10-county region, including Trail of Tears sites, cemeteries, parks, museums and various Native American annual events.

SETTA is partnered with the local PBS station, WTCI. PBS’s award-winning series American Experience that featured We Shall Remain series in April 2009.  This five-part miniseries establishes Native American history as an essential part of American history. A portion of the third episode, “Trail of Tears” was filmed in and around the southeast Tennessee region. WTCI was chosen as one of five PBS stations from across the country to receive a grant to create a community coalition to make local and regional connections to the national story presented by We Shall Remain.
