The groundbreaking for this imposing, Gothic revival chapel took place in 1904, with construction beginning the following year. Designed by renowned
Boston
architect Ralph Adams Cram, All Saints’ is one of the premier architectural gems in the area. Though construction was halted in 1907 due to an economic panic that caused the Bank of Winchester to fail, sufficient funds were made available in 1910 to make the structure functional. However, the chapel was not completed to its present state of grandeur until July of 1959. Incorporated in the architectural design of the building are numerous aspects borrowed from European cathedrals. The rose window was inspired by the ornate window that graces the south transept at Notre Dame; the high, vaulted ceilings were borrowed from the cathedrals at
Amiens
and
Chartres
; the tower is highly reminiscent of the
University
Church
at
Oxford
University
. At 134 feet, the tower is an impressive home for the Leonidas Polk Memorial Carillon. The carillon’s 56 bells were caste in
France
and shipped by sea to
New Orleans
. The largest bell weighs three and one-half tons.
