Forest Hills Cemetery has long been the burial ground for Chattanoogans from all walks of life; from wealthy industrialist to modest domestic servant, Forest Hills has served as a final resting place for all Chattanoogans for 125 years. Founded in 1880 by a group of civic leaders including the prominent real estate developer Col. A.M. Johnson, Forest Hills quickly became a popular burial place not only for its convenient location, but for its natural beauty, as well. Stunning sprays of azaleas, dogwoods, and flowering trees dot the hillsides in April. Autumn brings an array of bright hues from the deciduous trees that cover the 100 acre park. Historically speaking, Forest Hills Cemetery is significant in that many influential men and women are buried there, ranging from Senators to Civil War officers, industrialists to internationally renowned entertains. However, one cannot visit Forest Hills without being stunned by the natural beauty of the trees and flowers, and the artistic masterwork to be found in the fine old mausoleums and monuments.
