Founded in 1917 by a group of faculty members and students from Southern Junior College (now Southern Adventist University), the Collegedale Church of Seventh-day Adventists has grown from a group of 50 devoted charter members to a massive congregation of more than 3,000. Services were first held in the Thatcher Mansion (known as the “Yellow House”), and were later conducted in the boys’ dormitory.

By 1923 the congregation had grown so large that a new space for worship was necessary. In that year ground was broken for Lynn Wood Hall, which served the congregation well until 1945 when the ever-growing congregation moved into the Tabernacle. The Tabernacle had been built in 1934 as a camp meeting auditorium, but it was quickly transformed into the Collegedale Church ’s new home. By the 1960’s the congregation had, once again, outgrown its church building. On December 18, 1965 the hymn-singing congregation marched from the Tabernacle to its new sanctuary. Though vast additions have been made since that time, the congregation still occupies the space.

The Collegedale Church houses the Anton Heiller Memorial Organ. With 70 stops and 108 ranks, it is one of the largest tracker organs in North America.
