Established in 1857 by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South as Athens Female College , Tennessee Wesleyan has operated under several different names. The college closed its doors in 1863 due to economic hardships caused by the Civil War, but reopened four years later. The reopening of the college was spearheaded this time by the northern branch of the Methodist church, and the name of the institution was changed to East Tennessee Wesleyan University . The name was later changed to Grant Memorial University , and later was known the Athens School of The University of Chattanooga . Since 1925 the school has been called Tennessee Wesleyan College . Of particular architectural importance is the Old College Hall. This building has stood at the center of the campus throughout the school’s history, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to housing various academic offices, classrooms, and dormitories, the building was used as a hospital during the Civil War.
