Traveling over Signal Mountain to the Sequatchie Valley, the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church is the first landmark in the valley. There has been a church on the site since 1852. A portion of the current building dates from 1884.

The first church at the Chapel Hill site was Hennigar's Chapel, built in 1852 of planks and logs, and named for the circuit rider John Henniger. The first burial in the cemetery dates to 1949. The area around Hennigar's Chapel was used by some of General Crittenden's men as a campground during the Civil War. They took planks from the church to build sleeping quarters. What remained of the church burned in August 1863.

In 1884 the present church was built. In 1904 the church applied to the federal government for compensation to the church for damages during the Civil War. The application was unsuccessful. The vestibule was added in the 1940's. The church hosts a Decoration Day and Homecoming on the 3rd Sunday in May.
