The Brainerd Levee
423-757-4963

Offers refuge and viewing of the great blue, little blue and green-backed herons, and great egrets May-September. Watch for common snipe and waterfowl in the winter. Blue-winged teal are frequent in migration in April and September-November. The wet fields and edges support nesting willow flycatchers and grasshopper sparrows. Beaver and muskrat inhabit the adjacent oxbows. The snail darter, a federally listed fish, was rediscovered in South Chickamauga Creek in 1980 after it was thought to be extinct.

Hours: Late afternoon viewing is best.

Directions: Take I-24 to Exit 184 Moore Road. Go North on Moore Rd 2.5 miles. Moore ends at intersection with Shallowford Rd. Levee parking is on the right.
