Originally constructed by Black Civil War Soldiers, the National Cemetery is among the oldest and most picturesque in America. The marked graves of 148 Black Civil War Soldiers are located in the northeast corner of the cemetery.

Soldiers from all periods of service, to include more than 12,000 Civil War soldiers, are buried in this vast, hilly cemetery. A complete index of burials is available at all times just outside the Cemetery Office.
