The Chattanooga Field office of The Trust for Public Land has been working with the City of Chattanooga and Hamilton County since 1994 to facilitate land acquisition, planning, and funding for the regional greenway system. The center of the greenway system is the Tennessee Riverpark, a linear park along the banks of the magnificent Tennessee River. One feature of this park is the Riverwalk, which consists of 12 miles of concrete, handicapped accessible greenway trail. The Riverwalk runs from Coolidge Park in North Chattanooga south across the Tennessee River via the Walnut Street Bridge (the longest pedestrian bridge in the world), alongside downtown, northeast through the Bluff View Art District, past the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, by the industrial plants of Amnicola Highway, through the Amnicola Marsh, and terminates at the Fishing Park immediately below the Chickamauga Dam. The Riverpark and all its associated destinations are the most beloved outdoor spaces in Chattanooga. The Chattanooga Greenway Master Plan calls for creating greenway trails along tributaries of the Tennessee River and connecting them to the Riverpark. Targeted areas include the North Chickamauga Creek, the South Chickamauga Creek, the Chattanooga Creek, Mountain Creek, and Lookout Creek. In addition, a series of urban greenway trails has been identified that will one day connect neighborhoods to the creeks and through these trails connect to the Tennessee Riverwalk.
TPL's Chattanooga office also coordinates the local Greenways Task Force, a networking group of greenway interest groups, watershed advocates, neighborhood representatives, land trust staff, and government officials.
For more information about the Chattanooga Greenways Program, contact TPL's Chattanooga office at 423-265-5229.
