Whitwell, TN
Buttonwillow Plantation
423-658-7478
A portrait of Confederate hero Jefferson Davis hangs above the glowing fireplace in the men's parlor of Steve and Alison Gipson's home. An 1858 piano is in one corner, against a backdrop of floral wallcoverings and antique furniture. This is just one of the meticulously decorated rooms in the Gipsons' three-story abode atop Whitwell Mountain on 60 acres of land they've named Buttonwillow Plantation. Everything down to the door hardware is remodeled after what a wealthy Southern family's residence would have looked like in 1864, Mr. Gipson said.
Visitors get to hear the couple, dressed in period clothing, explain the history behind every nook and cranny of their home. For the tour, a tree decorated with popcorn garlands and minicandles adorns the women's parlor. Guests also are treated to old-time refreshments.
Hours: The couple are giving Christmas tours of the home December 6-19. The hourlong tours are by appointment only.
Cost: There is NO CHARGE and children are welcome.
