Chattanooga, TN
The weekend that includes the first Friday in May is the traditional time for the 'Boxcar' Pinion Memorial Bluegrass Festival. This festival was organized in honor of this well-known local bass player by his family and a host of volunteers. For the first eleven years, the festival was located at Camp Jordan in East Ridge. In 2002, the festival moved to Raccoon Mountain Camp south of Chattanooga along the Cummings Highway.
This festival draws name acts year after year, due to its professional operation and organization. Top Bluegrass acts have included The James King Band, Lonesome River Band, The Country Gentlemen, and IIIrd Tyme Out among many others. There is plenty of jamming after hours in the parking lot, around the campfires, and in the backstage areas.
A small memorial exhibit commemorating 'Boxcar' Pinion's bluegrass career, with photos, the musician's well-worn acoustic bass, and his trademark feathered hat, is set up in the concession area. This is a family-run event.
Suitable for large groups.
Admission fee runs to about $25 for a two-day pass.
Bring a lawn chair to see the show under a covered, shaded area.
Concession foods and snacks are available.
Directions: The Festival location may change in the future, but is currently at Raccoon Mountain Camp, off Highway 41, southwest of Chattanooga (Hamilton County). From Chattanooga, take Highway 24 South, past the base of Lookout Mountain, to the Highway 41 (Will Cummings Highway) Exit. Turn right. Raccoon Mountain is about 2 miles past the Exit.
