Crafts, homemade jams, and fresh vegetables and fruit are for sale at the booths. A small music area is set up near the steps of the courthouse, while inside, the Scopes Trial is re-enacted in all its glory. Usually the event takes place on the third weekend in July, beginning on the prior Thursday at the Rhea County Court House in Dayton, TN.
The scheduled performance of local bands is a relatively small part of the festival, but musicians come to jam. In rainy weather, the jams go underground in the basement of the Courthouse, where the acoustics are good. Strains of plaintive fiddle draw people downstairs from the trial reenactment to listen to the music while they view the small but well-done history museum.
Suitable for large groups.
Bring a lawn chair or blanket to see the performances in a tree-shaded area.
Concessions of a wide variety of food available.
No admission. All performances free.
Small admission cost for the reenactment of the Scopes Trial.
