Chattanooga Traditional Dance Society hosts lively contra dances with high energy bands and callers on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month (with exceptions in June, July and August--when dances are held only on the 4th Saturdays AND in December--when a holiday dance is held on the 2nd Saturday). At contra dances, it's all about community and the sheer joy of movement and music. Everyone is welcome to participate. Each contra dance is described in simple detail by a caller, who "teaches" a short step-by-step walk-through with the dancers, prior to the band playing at tempo. Even those with no dance experience catch on quickly, and the more seasoned contra dancers enjoy helping newcomers feel comfortable with the steps.
Wonderful musicians play contagious, toe-tapping music of the South Cumberland area, with influences as far-reaching as French Canadian regions, Ireland, England, and even jazz and blues. Contra dancing is a great way to make new friends and have a fun time. Contra dances are multi-generational and always done in a smoke and alcohol free setting. Light refreshments are served.
A free contra dance lesson begins at 7:30pm. The dances are from 8pm-11pm at All Saints
