A.J. Tomlinson

A native of Indiana , Ambrose Jessup Tomlinson (1865-1943) was of Quaker background. In 1899 he moved to the mountains of western North Carolina and worked as an itinerant preacher. In 1903 he joined the group that would later call itself the Church of God, and was elected as their first general overseer in 1909 in Cleveland, TN. Removed from office in 1923, he left the organization and formed what would later be known as the Church of God of Prophecy, also based in Cleveland.
