Murals in Southeast TN
Even though our Mural Monday campaign on Instagram and Facebook is over, we’re gonna blast you with some from all over the Southeast TN Region! We’ve been putting together a new brochure of the murals in our area!
We want to save some of the murals for our brochure, so here are just a few more! Don’t forget to look for our brochures at a travel center near you!
“We Shall Not Be Moved”
This mural was a collaboration between Mark Making and 85 students from Howard School. Back in 1960, students from Howard School participated in the sit-ins that took place all over the country, making history right here in Chattanooga. The 85 students worked with professional artists to bring their ideas to life, using styles from the Harlem Renaissance as inspiration. Located on the east wall of 526 E MLK Boulevard in Chattanooga.
“Monkey Town Mural”
Since this mural is between an eye doctor and a dentist, it has both referenced in the painting. A monkey wears glasses while holding a strawberry as a nod to the iconic Strawberry Festival that takes place in Dayton, and an eagle rests on the handle of a toothbrush, paying homage to the local high school’s mascot. Located on the southwest wall of 1296 Market Street in Dayton.
“Allegory of Hope”
Funded by the Tennessee Arts Commission, Britt Floor painted this to inspire the youth of Grundy County to rise up to their full potential. It’s located on the northwest wall of 2220 Main St. in Palmer and is part of a multi-year oral history project through Tennessee’s South Cumberland Tourism Partnership. Located on the northwest wall of 2220 Main Street in Palmer.
“Back Alley Gallery”
Stroll through the Back Alley Gallery to see art displayed in doorframes. Each door can be opened to find local art, and festoon lighting adds some charm to the space. The doors are all unique, so be sure to open all of them! Located in the alley between 191 Church St. NE and 170 N Ocoee Street in Cleveland.
“SloPokes Speedshop”
Done by The Artist Seven in 2023, this mural is found on the side of an autobody shop in Jasper. SloPokes specializes in the restoration of American muscle cars from the 30s and 90s. The mural shows such cars, one of them speeding down the road surrounded by hills and mountains. Located on the southeast wall of 5599 US-41 in Jasper.
“Paint Waterfall”
Pouring over the back of the Arts in the Burg building, you’ll find this mural that was done by Becky Phelps in 2022. Arts in the Burg is a nonprofit gallery dedicated to bringing support to local artists and create interest in local art. This mural features different words that represent the mission of Arts in the Burg. Located on the southeast wall of 207 S Cedar Avenue in South Pittsburg.
“Battle of Athens”
In opposition to the political machine that had taken hold of McMinn County’s offices, the veterans returning home from World War II decided their right to vote wouldn’t be infringed upon. After seizing the National Guard Armory, the GIs forced the local election commission to swear in their candidates. Despite being a source of shame early on, McMinn County has honored this day through the mural by Sam Welty, highlighting the resistance against corruption and the power of citizen action. Located on the northwest wall of 206 N White Street in Athens.
“2024 Song of the Year”
Cody McCarver is a musician local to Dunlap, and he won 2024 Song of the Year at the Inspirational Country Music Association Awards! The cover art for his song, “God Did That”, is painted on this mural to commemorate his achievement, and it lists the award to his community with pride. It’s located on the west wall of 140 Cherry Street in Dunlap, and it was painted in 2024 by Mary Layne and Donna McGovern.
“Greetings from Decatur”
Everyone will feel welcomed immediately when they are greeted by this mural in downtown Decatur. Each letter in Decatur captures the essence of the town perfectly: from the farms, the Trail of Tears, to the wildlife available. There’s always something to do in Meigs County, and this mural tells you everything you need to know. Located on the south wall of 210 Main Street in Decatur.
